The East Midlands group was formed in April 2011. It particularly welcomes members from Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, but anyone with PE or NG postcodes – from the Peterborough and Nottingham areas – or even Derby who would like to be involved would be most welcome.
Activities
Activities include practical conservation work and outdoor field visits, plus indoor events every two months during the autumn and winter. Key birds will be the kites and ospreys of the area.

Starting with just a handful of people with a huge amount of enthusiasm the group has grown in numbers and has enjoyed an active few months with the first indoor meeting, “Return Of The Red Kite” attended by 37 guests, followed up by playing host to the successful Hawk and Owl Trust Weekend and AGM at Rutland Water.
On a dark, foggy November night 43 guests attended an evening with Simon Dudhill from the Raptor Foundation who gave a fascinating insight into “Working with Raptors”. The evening was not only enjoyable, with a great atmosphere, but also raised £196.
The group has attended a local village festival and helped out on the Hawk and Owl Trust stand at the huge, annual Bird Fair at Rutland Water (pictured).
After a break over Christmas the group looks forward to resuming indoor meetings in March.
Planned outdoor events starting in the spring include:
- A field day in Lincolnshire with Gary Steele, a long-time member of the Hawk and Owl Trust, visiting church steeples and brick towers to see where the owls make their nests and hopefully see the ringing of owlets.
- A visit to the Raptor Foundation to view the hospital.
- A trip to the Trust's Sculthorpe Moor nature reserve in North Norfolk.
