Tawny Owls in Barn Owl box
We had hoped that these tawny owls would nest in this barn owl box.
This pair of tawny owls visited this barn owl box several times from late February. Tawny owls normally nest in a hole in a tree though they will take up residence in purpose built tawny boxes which have a much smaller floor area.
While not a rare bird it is nocturnal and is unlikely to be seen during the day, unlike the barn or little owl.
Note how submissive the male is in the presence of the female. The images are taken at night with an infra red sensitive camera, consequently they are in black and white.
Unfortunately, they have not been seen in the box since the 7th of March. We do not know the reason for their absence. Maybe the box was just too big.
